The true discovery of what the painting of Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquez (1599-1660) was and represented was already the work of the 19th century. The pictorial collections of the royal patrimony became national property and were integrated into the Museo del Prado, founded in 1819. At the same time, his work was rediscovered by Goya, on whom he was to have great influence, as he later had on Manet - who named him "painter of painters" - and impressionism in general.
