Michael Snow Sequences. A History Of His Art

Michael Snow is undoubtedly one of the most important living artists and a central figure in American art of the second half of the 20th century. Since receiving the "Independent Film Award" (1968) awarded by Film Culture magazine, his work has been placed at the level of the great figures of experimental cinema such as Stan Brakhage and Gregory Markopoulos, and in the company of two other artists-turned- -filmmakers: the photographer Robert Frank and the painter Andy Warhol. The image of Michael Snow that emerges in this comprehensive monograph is that of a contemporary Renaissance man. The artist himself reflected this disciplinary diversity in a profile written at the end of the sixties: “I am not a professional. My paintings are made by a filmmaker, sculpture by a musician, movies by a painter, music by a filmmaker, paintings by a sculptor, sculpture by a filmmaker, movies by a musician, music by a sculptor. ..sometimes, everyone works together [...]”. Using a seventeen-chapter structure, the artist makes a complete journey through his work, writing the texts, establishing the sequences.
