Footprints, collages, sand, wood, earth, rope, words, letters: Tàpies' repertoire is endless. Miró encouraged him to use all kinds of shapes and materials. And even more so in an environment devoid of meaning - that of the Spanish postwar period - where official reality had nothing to do with reality. Surprisingly, true reality will claim its pre-eminence, the expressiveness of increasingly organic materials, and will endow his painting more with materiality than with meaning.
