The painter and engraver José Ribera (1591-1652, also known as Jusepe de Ribera) was one of the first and most beloved exponents of Caravaggio's "Tenebrismo", in which an absolute drama is extracted from the extreme contrasts of light and shadow. Despite the tendency to identify him with the Spanish school, Ribera hastened to leave his native land, settling in Italy around 1611 and residing in Rome and Naples; However, he often signed his paintings "Jusepe de Ribera, Spanish."
