Velazquez

The true discovery of what the painting of Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquez (1599-1660) was and represented was already the work of the 19th century. The pictorial collections of the royal patrimony became national property and were integrated into the Museo del Prado, founded in 1819. At the same time, his work was rediscovered by Goya, on whom he was to have great influence, as he later had on Manet - who named him "painter of painters" - and impressionism in general. Velázquez's career can be considered as a constant investigation of the relationship between painting and nature, in which the brushstroke takes the main role. As he developed it, he achieved an unprecedented physical and psychological naturalism with progressively more pronounced and elegant brushwork, achieving miraculous effects of illusion with a condensed and astonishing technique, based more on deduction than on elaboration of detail. The synthesis of the life and work of Velázquez that Professor Santiago Alcolea i Gil carries out in this book offers the reader a broad overview of one of the most notable creators of universal painting.
